Clique time:
New Zealand is the land of single lane bridges... On the main roads they are very common.
It was dark, dim and raining heavily when we got up, light breakie and we packed the car in the rain. Into Fox Glacier township through a winding road and viz about 100 meters on either side of the road. Out the other side heading for Haast for a coffee break and good look around.
Well, Haast is a tiny town with 2 motels and 2 snack bar/coffee shops. Originally, we were going to stay here for the night but glad we didn't commit to that as we would not have had anything to do there - the travel time was not enough so going on was a good idea.
We came through Haast Pass and could see a little blue sky, and wow a huge fresh water lake - Lake Wanaka was there and it was huge, snow capped mountains behind the lake. After travelling down the lake for quite a while we turned left through a pass and there in front of us was another huge lake - Lake Hawea. Breathe taking and totally un-explainable.
Came to Wanaka township and were so pleased we came on, there is a huge lake with the town on the foreshore and mountains behind. SO like "The Lake District & Keswick" it is remarkable.
Bert and I went to town to do some window shopping but actually bought a few things at the walking shop, great sale items.
Home to our new apartment for lamb and roast veggies for dinner. Night is now falling and time to settle down.
Across from our accommodation is a fantastic park that goes to the Lakeside and there are some of the biggest pine trees I have ever seen. See photo of Bert hugging a tree.
Highlights of the day:
Bob : Road trip and views.
Bert : Road trip was good, different weather different scenery.
Joyce : Stunning views and surprise of Lake Hawea, stunning apartment and the settings.
I am rating our accommodation as we go and so far the rating is
1. The Fairways at Kaikoura
2. Wanaka Homestead - tonight's apartment
Everything else was ok but these two are exceptionally nice.
